Sounds like the transmission may have kicked into stay-alive mode because of low battery voltage. Replace the battery and see if that solves the problem. The later model mercedes benz have an electronic gear shift assembly and I would not have a soda or coffee spill over the gear shift console because it will short the assembly out and your car transmission will not shift out of lower gear or will stay in a lim mode or you can manually shift to the D by depressing the buttom on the console.

Good luck. Rocky answered 8 years ago. Steve answered 8 years ago. Lorne answered 8 years ago. The transmission is computer controlled a dead battery would affect it.

Did you get a jump start from somebody? If you jumped the car incorrectly you could cause damage to the electrical system and possibly damaged the transmission computer and even the ECU. Mick answered 6 years ago. Pull out the black liner thing at the front of the compartment.

You should now see a hole in the front wall of the compartment where you just pulled the liner out. Now, grab the gear lever and pull it out of park while at the same time pushing the screw driver against the thing that stopped it. This should activate the emergency release allowing you to drive the car but be warned, if you don't take the car to a garage to get the problem fixed then you will have to do this every time you want to drive the car.

My C would stuck at neutral when stop. Any comments? The skiers beside us don't know what to think. They move over, so we ease into the gas again, blowing by in a plume of powder as we make our way down a ski resort access road that crisscrosses several trails along the way.

Most people think you need an SUV to pull off a stunt like this, yet we're barreling down the slope in a Mercedes-Benz S 4Matic as if it were just another side street. No one in their right mind would subject their own S to such conditions, but Mercedes wants to prove its new AWD S-Class can do more than climb icy driveways.

After several runs up and down the mountain on what looks like an oversized bobsled track, the effectiveness of the S's new 4Matic AWD is obvious.

It was an E-Class-only option from '87 to '01, but when the third generation of 4Matic was introduced in it was added to select versions of the entry-level C-Class and top-of-the-line S-Class. The 4Matic system in the redesigned Mercedes-Benz S is an all-new fourth-generation setup which, unlike previous systems, was designed entirely in-house.

This means no added gear noise, minimal weight gain and little perceptible difference in handling between a standard rear-wheel-drive S and the 4Matic version.

Not much new under the skin There are a few changes to the S 4Matic's chassis versus the two-wheel-drive version. The steering rack was repositioned, redesigned suspension arms were swapped in up front and the air springs were retuned. A smaller rear differential is used since there's less power sent through it and there are minor revisions to the brakes. The wheels and tires are exactly the same.

In addition to a center differential, 4Matic adds a front driveshaft to feed power to the front axle. It used to be an awkward setup that required carving out extra room next to the transmission, which ate into the front-passenger foot well.

A more compact design of both the driveshaft and the differential allows this 4Matic system to fit within a standard two-wheel-drive chassis with no modifications. Also, a slightly modified version of Mercedes' latest seven-speed automatic transmission is used and the total weight gain for all the extra hardware is a mere pounds.

With horsepower and pound-feet of torque available from the 5. Don't expect to feel a difference Other than a single badge on the rear deck, it's hard to tell the S 4Matic from the standard model. The car looks the same when we get in and drives the same, too.

Weaving through traffic on the mountains, we never sense any signs of the extra AWD hardware. No wheel binding, no new noises, nothing. Same goes on the highway. The extra weight isn't enough to slow it down, and the flawless shift quality of the seven-speed automatic transmission is unchanged. Although Mercedes says the 4Matic can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5. Even if it's slower than Mercedes claims, the S is still plenty fast. It may look big and cumbersome, but it whips through traffic easily.

And although the suspension is adjustable, you don't need to fool with it to get a perfectly refined ride.

Difficutly Going Into Gear

Minimal wind noise, excellent seats and a useful adaptive cruise control system make it almost too comfortable to stay awake. Pretty good for a 4,pound sedan with nearly horsepower. Once we get to the snow, the 4Matic's inputs become more obvious.

Too much gas and the computer cuts in until the tires catch up. Get into the brakes hard and the system takes over there, too, sometimes a little longer than we would like. In these conditions we can sense the system moving power from wheel to wheel to find traction, but it's not aggressive enough to be felt through the steering. There's more steering assist dialed in than we remember in the standard S, but the car is a prototype, so production versions may not feel so light.

We hope so, as it's fine for sliding around in the snow, but back on the pavement it feels a little too Lincoln Town Car for our tastes. Is 4Matic worth it? If you don't own a snow shovel, 4Matic isn't worth the premium. There are a few troubleshooting steps that can quickly help you narrow down the problem.

Have someone watch the brake lights as you step on the pedal. If the brake lights work, you can move on to the next step in troubleshooting. The next possibility is a failed brake shift interlock solenoid. This solenoid releases the shifter from park when you step on the brake pedal. You can check the solenoid by stepping on the brake pedal and listening for a click sound as the solenoid activates.

If you hear the click each time you apply the brakes, then the solenoid is probably fine. If your car passed both of these tests, the problem is most-likely a broken, plastic part inside the shifter assembly.

These plastic pieces break all the time, resulting in a stuck shifter see image below. We prefer to save our customers money by replacing the broken, plastic part with a stronger, aluminum one.

Prior to that, I worked as a mechanic in Dallas TX. I have always had an interest in fixing cars, and still love it to this day. I just wanted to send a shout out to Mr. He is amazing! His knowledge of cars and his passion to help others are priceless.

Repairs on a Mercedes are usually done at the dealer but Joe has the same knowledge at a more reasonable price. I highly recommend!!

Hi Carl, I buy my repair kits from a local jobber warehouse. Call me and I will discuss with you how to get it. ML miles and I just got an oil change after my car got loud and when my friend checked the oil it was half the minimum requirement and I needed an oil change badly.

Got the oil change and my car was back to sounding and driving smooth. Before I tow it to the shop, I was wondering what some possible causes are?! This shifter problem occurs on many Mercedes Benz models.

It sounds like you could possibly have a similar issue. I was wondering if you used the aftermarket aluminum repair kit that I recently posted to fix your shifter or was it that your vehicle needed a brake interlock solenoid to finish the repair?

All I could say about feeling heat around the shifter is that most of these cars have a heat shield or two inside the console that may not have been replaced or installed correctly when the shifter was fixed. If I were you I would have the shop that repaired you shifter do a recheck on it.

By the way are you in the DFW area? If you are we would be more than happy to look at it for you. Let me know if we can be any further assistance to you.I just gave someone a jump on a car that's been sitting in the her for weeks, I drive off 30 minutes later my car stop going past first gear and when I shift it into gear i can hear it shift in hard into first what's the problem?

This car is a dual clutch right? I don't think it had anything to do with the jump start, unfortunately it sounds like it might be a manufacturing problem.

This is uncommon but the ecu might have a problem telling the gears to change. Also if the car has a different modes comfort, sport or whatever try and shift it a different mode and see if there is any change. My C would stuck at neutral when stop. Any comments? Dennison answered 5 years ago. Detailerdeb answered 5 years ago. I have a C 1.This is a new one. Today as I was driving I noticed hefty jolts after stopping and significant jerks in the shifting of the transmission as I accelerated.

Then it happened. As I attempted to drive away after stopping at a red light, the transmission seemed to totally disengage and the car would not move.

I shifted in to neutral and then shifted back into drive and still nothing. Not until I used the manual shift buttons on the steering wheel was I able to get the car moving.

There was a lot of jerking and slipping in and out of gear for about a quarter mile and then the transmission reengaged. Started about months ago. Experiencing very rough jolting type shifting, most commonly occurs after being parked on an incline or decline. Occurs when driving up or down an incline.

Also, occurs on the freeway or after using cruise control. Transmission shifts from first to second gear and stays there until it's restarted. Requires turning off the car waiting a few seconds and restarting to reset the gears. Check engine light now starting to come on.

Very dangerous when driving in heavy traffic or on the freeway. After researching this issue I cannot believe it simply hasn't been recalled. This is a very dangerous issue I will not allow my wife to even drive the car unless I am with her. Appears to be a very common issue with these vehicle. Located a class action lawsuit that unfortunately was dismissed due to the complaint citing fraud. I don't believe Mercedes sold these vehicles knowing the transmission was faulty.

I would just expect them after receiving numerous complaints to offer their clients a repair option via recall.
